Mammoet working on nationwide landmark gas well closure project

Mammoet is supporting WellGear Group and NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij) in one of the world’s largest gas well closure projects. This involves decommissioning 800 gas wells across 350 locations in the Netherlands, including the Groningen gasfield. The project started on 1 May 2024 and will continue for over a decade.

Mammoet’s role includes coordinating on-site preparations, managing transportation, and assembling WellGear’s Plug & Abandonment (P&A) hydraulic workover unit, which is electrically driven to reduce carbon and noise impact. The unit and its equipment, weighing 180 tons, will be transported in 50 truckloads and assembled using mobile cranes.

Mammoet also provides rig layout plans, safety drawings, and guidance on civil works for remote locations. Project Manager Martin Alards emphasized the significance of this project, noting that it is the largest of its kind in the Netherlands and possibly the world.
