Enabling high-speed travel under London

After completing a journey of over 8 km beneath West London, the Tunnel Boring Machine Sushila was lifted from the ground using Mammoet’s custom-designed gantry system.

This operation, carried out for Herrenknecht AG on behalf of the Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture, is contributing to the final underground segment of the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd route from Birmingham to London’s Euston station.

The cutter head, along with the front and middle shields, which together weigh 880 tonnes, were hoisted in one piece from the vent shaft after excavating 1.2 million tonnes of earth.
